I’ve been doing a lot of work to get the California Codes online, and I now have something to show for it. This is a screenshot of Business & Professions Code Section 22947.4, an anti-spyware statute. (Which is pretty cool; I wonder if Oregon has something similar. Anyone know?)
For comparison, here’s the original code as its presented on the state’s website. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the fonts, white-space, outlining, and navigation. Ahead on my roadmap:
- Print feature
- Citations to sources
- Legal news
- Interlinked & related statutes
- Smart search
Great work, Rob. The CA state site has needed a facelift (and internal citations) for a very long time. Looking forward to seeing this on your site!

How did you decide which state codes to get online first?

Hi Kindra; I went about it in a fairly systematic way: ranked each state by both population and the need for improvements to its website. Additionally, doing other Ninth Circuit states after Oregon will be helpful because they share the same branch of federal law.

I have to give you compliments on the work that was done to get California estate planning laws up online. It has really really helped us by finding items for cases.
